Story Time!

Hi there!

I have a little story for you today, which has been really fun to write. I hope you enjoy it!

First day of Kindergarten. This is a photo of a photo, in black and white, hence the low quality. Forgive me!

..............................................................................

Summers growing up were busy for me. There wasn't a ton of down time. I tried all things extracurricular.

Well, most of the things.

I played sports, took music lessons, dreamed of the theatrical stage and geeked out at academic camps.

I remember playing on two softball teams, basketball camps, volleyball camps, leadership and economic camps (like I said, I geeked out), theater camps and the epitome of my nerdiness: band camp.

Aside from an awesome week-long family vacation and maybe a couple weekend trips to family events in Pittsburgh, my schedule was packed. I loved being in the gym or on a campus learning and doing and having fun with friends.

When the school year came around I was too busy trying to be good at all of the things and studying all of the things that I barely slept. I'm pretty sure that I slept more in college and in grad school, actually. Oh and I tried to be cool, but that was on the back burner. I was better at being a dork.

Needless to say, I didn't have a job when I was in high school. When I tell people this I can feel the judgment as I hear scoffs and witness the sideways glance that makes it seem like I was (or even still am) a privileged brat. I can assure you that wasn't the case. Although, admittedly, I was a brat from time to time.
What? I was a tired teen! Who wasn't a brat?

Anyway, I started to work after high school graduation. By then I knew that my ultimate dream of being on Broadway was ridiculous and that I needed a new dream. I knew I'd figure out that new dream in college. In the meantime I got two jobs: one as a hostess at Bob Evans and another as a concession worker at a local golf course. I kind of loved these jobs and the work kept me busy. Plus, I worked with other youngins and both the restaurant and course closed at a relatively early time so I still got to be social in the evenings. I actually worked at the course throughout college during the summer and Bob Evans year-round. I even graduated to a Bob Evans server. Big stuff, folks. Because tips.

Let me pause for a moment and ask the question you may be wondering:
Why am I talking about my first foray into the working world?
Well, curiously enough, I was introduced to a project TheLadders is currently running asking about bloggers' first jobs and career paths, hence the story today. The picture of me from Kindergarten is just for fun.

Did I pique your interest so far?
Then read on, friends! There's more to the story!

While I was in college I had a couple of internships in DC. I was a Political Science and Broadcasting double major at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, dreaming of one day being on CNN. I have more of a face for radio, though, so I was more involved in radio than TV. Anyway, my internships took more of a political focus than broadcasting. I interned in DC for my hometown congressman and the following summer at a non-profit. Those two internships were shaped by the incredible experiences of the city. Sure I learned some things, like how to fold constituent letters like a BOSS and research boring policies, but mainly I learned that I wanted to call DC home after graduation.

But what to do? CNN sure wasn't happening and I considered being a lawyer. So I got a job at a large law firm in Dupont Circle and fell in love with DC even more. I also made great friends and so many memories. Honestly though, after two weeks at the firm I knew law wasn't for me.

Quick lesson roundup:
By the age of 22 I knew a few things: I was never going to be on Broadway or CNN, the life of law was not for me and DC was where I wanted to live.

What to do, what to do...

Admittedly, I slept more and partied more when I was in DC. Granted, these are two things I did a fair amount of in college, but definitely took advantage of post-college since I had so much more free time than I was ever used to having. I also knew that I needed another degree because I was basically switching careers at this point and couldn't afford to have an unpaid internship to get my foot in the door. I also knew I wanted to stay in DC. But a career change was daunting.

When I was 23 I was set on applying to grad school, but I just needed to pick what I wanted to do! I took a lot of time and prayer to reassess what I didn't like (law, traditional desk jobs, working paycheck to paycheck), what I was good at (Excel, talking to people, organization, teamwork), balanced with my interests (being social, learning new things), the classes I liked growing up (history, math, communications, some politics) and the landscape at the time (the growth of social media and tech in general).

After all of that thinking and all of the prayers, I figured a Communications Masters Degree was the ticket. I started grad school with a focus on Political Communication and an interest in non-profit work. I volunteered and got an internship at Street Sense that first year, followed by another (paid!!!) internship. It was here, at The Collaboration Project under the National Academy of Public Administration and incredible mentors, where I found my "calling," if you will. I learned some html, Excel tricks, and tactics for getting government agencies to...wait for it...collaborate, and realized that all of what I learned involved marketing.

Pair this experience with some killer statistics classes as well as user experience and communication technology classes in school and I was well on my way to a career in Marketing. For class projects I would do free work for actual brands and provide actual recommendations. I made an online portfolio of my work with my meager html skills. I was confident in my abilities and ready for my future.

By the time I graduated with my Masters of Communication from Georgetown I was ready for a career in Marketing. My husband and I were also ready to take our careers to the next level and moved to Chicago a week after I graduated. I am in my third job since moving here in 2011 and I haven't regretted a thing. I can't even begin to describe everything I have learned as a Marketer in the last four years, but I am now a Strategic Research Analyst, having fun in Excel, brainstorming ideas for our incredible clients and working with the smartest people in the industry.

Not too bad for a Bob Evans hostess band geek, eh?

My story certainly isn't over. I have so much more that I want to do and accomplish in my career and in life. Honestly, the more I learn the more I know what I don't know...you know?

I'm not sure where my current position will lead me, but I have kept an open mind so far and I think that will guide me wherever I land next. Thankfully, I have my wonderful husband, faith, family, friends and mentors to help me as I continue the journey.

Current headshot :)

..............................................................................

I have quite a twisted tale, and I'm not sure what I have said and done would inspire anyone looking for career advice. However, this was a really fun reflection. I am so tickled that TheLadders was curious enough about me to invite my post and I have them to thank for some new goals percolating in my head.

What's your story?

Have a good one!

Little Bit of Sass Thursday

Photobucket

Howdy! So much has happened since my lazy Sunday. Here's a quick recap:

Monday I tried Jillian Michaels ab workout On Demand. Wowsah. I need to keep doing that. I yelled back at her through the TV. I think it helped. We're cool now, though.

Tuesday was a big day! First of all, I WAS HIRED!!!!!!!!! You're looking at a full-time employee! Big step up from my blog posts over the summer, eh? I contract through the end of the week and then boom. I get a salary. A-mazing. An impressively sizable group of co-workers joined me at the last minute to celebrate at a bar across the street from our office. Then I went to my first book club meeting! A group of ten fun ladies decided last Friday that we'll get together once a month to discuss a book while enjoying each others company and sipping beverages of choice. It was a grand time getting to know new girls and honestly just being in a group of girls again! Our first book is Bitter is the New Black by Chicagoan Jen Lancaster. I've read it before, but she is SO funny that I can't wait to read it again! We're hoping she'll attend our November outing! You better believe I'll sport pearls and a polo for that momentous occasion. There will be a photo on here too. She's seriously one of my favorite authors and inspires me to write. Oh! And after the book club meeting Andrew took me to a late and silly dinner to celebrate! He's so fun and sweet :) His cousin Daniela brought me some flowers to book club, too!

Don't the flowers look perfect on our mantle and especially in that blue vase?

Yesterday was also a fun day. After work I schlepped a big pumpkin about a mile up Lake Street to Andrew's office. I swear I put a smile on everyone's faces because really? Who carries a pumpkin around on a busy street? This girl does. Honestly I was terrified that I would drop it and have it splatter everywhere, including on me. I didn't want to get punk'd, if you will. Luckily I made it to Andrew's office without one trip or stumble! At his office I was showered with free candy, cheese, and beer. Yum! Then we trucked up to Lincoln Park for a pumpkin carving party! Andrew's good friends from MSU get together every year for carving, cider, and pumpkin seeds. It was a blast! Here's our creation:

Here's the group of pumpkins at the end of the night:

I thought ours was a pretty sassy rendition of a jack-o-lantern, don't you? We like to call it our pumpkin bucket, or pumpket. :) Stay sassy, my friends.

Friday's Fancies and Week 4 (Again)

Happy Friday!

First of all, hallelujah. I got through my first week at work (I love it!!) and Andrew and I are off for a weekend adventure. Here's my Friday's Fancies outfit, inspired by the new job! I seriously want to strut my sass in this outfit to a happy hour after work some day.

[Below the gorgeous outfit is my weekly weight loss diary post. Wah.]

Friday's Fancies

Weekly Update:
Weight loss:
Nada. I gained.

Total weight loss:
I gained. It sucks. I didn't eat anything bad this week, but I was careless about portion control and we ate dinner every night at 9pm or later. I have a feeling that's why the scale and I are not on speaking terms.

Pounds remaining to reach goal weight:
31.4 - depressing.

[I did not come up with my goal weight arbitrarily. This goal weight is based on the WW site guidelines. My goal weight is actually on the heavy range for my age and height.]

Overall mood this week:
Honestly I was hoping for a loss and I'm insanely disappointed. Full disclosure: I weighed another 1.5 pounds more when I woke up than I did when I got home from work, so I don't know what's going on with me. It makes me wonder if my body was just meant to look this way...and I know that's silly, so it also makes me wonder if when I get down to my goal weight will I be able to stay there? I know that Weight Watchers is a lifestyle and not a diet, but when I go to bed hungry and am "that girl" at the bar eating a salad then I just worry that being thin isn't something I am meant to be.

However, I rocked my outfit today at work. I feel like I look better even if the scale disagrees.

Worked out:
4 times, but one doesn't really count since it was a quick pick-me-up one evening this week. Sigh...

Mary's Musings Monday!

Photobucket

Hey everyone! Today was my first day on the job. It was quite a whirlwind but I enjoyed every minute of it! The office is a beautiful old warehouse with exposed brick throughout the space. Love! The commute takes about an hour but it's worth it. I would talk about this on a vlog post, but I just worked out and look a mess, which doesn't matter to me, but I'll spare you having to see me dripping in sweat. However, here is a pic of my first day outfit. What do you think? I am aware that I am pale but I refuse to say "no" to neutral pumps and a white blouse. Blinding, fabulous...same difference.

I can wear jeans to work when we don't have clients in the office, so I think this casual look will work well until I can fit into those dark skinny jeans I am longing to wear :)

Friday's Fancies and Week 3 (Again)

Happy Friday readers! First I have a Friday's Fancies I would like to share for the Long Distance Loving weekly post, then my weekly weigh-in Weight Watchers post.

Friday's Fancies

I just love this Lily dress and thought that pairing it with these shoes are a solid combination of class and sass. What do you think? If you "like" my set on {av}'s site (here) I could possibly win this week!

Weekly Update:
Weight loss:
I lost 1.4 pounds!

Total weight loss:
3!! - (I started again)

Pounds remaining to reach goal weight:
29.9 - so far to go.

[Please remember that I did not come up with my goal weight arbitrarily. This goal weight is based on the WW site guidelines. My goal weight is actually on the heavy range for my age and height.]

Overall mood this week:
I am OK with a slow weight loss. Other times when I re-start Weight Watchers I usually lose a little bit more at the beginning. Oh well, I feel good. Plus I got a job starting Monday, so my mood is pretty positive! :)

Worked out:
4 times!

Yummy finds:
I love Jimmy John's, but the bread isn't WW friendly. However, I can get my favorite sandwich (The Country Club) without cheese and mayo on an unwich (lettuce wrap) for only 3 points! Yay!! I do miss the bread and my friend mayo, but the mustard is tasty and it's a great way to save points so I can eat more throughout the day!

Little Bit of Sass Thursday!

Photobucket

Hey there sassy readers! How did you add some sass to your step today? I actually wore pearls, and while I adore pearls, it just felt wrong since I vowed that Thursdays would be the day of the week where I would strut my sass more than any other. However, the dress I wore with the pearls? It was a healthy mixture of sass and class if I do say so myself. Do you ever pair pearls with a sassy get-up? Do tell!!

No matter the wardrobe, I had a happy day. I got a job!!! Everyone I told (including my amazing internship co-workers) were happy for me! It really was a great day.

Since I enjoy my pinterest a little bit too much, here's a little sassy outfit from my sassy board to inspire you today. Snap your fingers, friends! Work it!

Confession Time

1) I went for a run and thought about food the whole time
2) Then I did OnDemand Exercise TV's Level 2 of The Butt Bible...have you heard of it? I LOVE it! I'm hoping my rear will rock soon.
3) Here's for the real confession...I'm watching E!...a show about Selena Gomez. I truly didn't know anything about the girl until this show, and she's a cute little kid, but still. Do I really need to know that she was on Barney or that she receives death threats for dating the Biebs? Did I really just refer to Justin Bieber as the Biebs?

This all translates rather easily: I.NEED.A.JOB.

Have a nice Thursday! ;)

Walking Along Wacker

This morning I met with a recruiter and heard exactly what I wanted and needed to hear: that I am a perfect fit for a number of positions they have available. Next step? She'll share my info to the other recruiters and find me positions, either full-time or freelance. After that lovely meeting I walked along Wacker on my way to meet Andrew for a birthday lunch (Happy Birthday!!!). Pretty view, eh??? :)

Mary's Musings Monday!

Hi there!

Sorry for the video looking awkward, but I was too exhausted to sit like a lady and instead sprawled out on my bed.

Thanks again, Cassie! :)

30 for 30 Photos: Day 15

So I didn't post yesterday because I couldn't come up with anything concrete for the 30 Day Photo Challenge. The assignment, if you will, is to post a picture of something I want to do before I die. Many people probably dream of doing something daring, like skydiving or bungee jumping. Not this gal. There are many things I want to do before I die, like get married, have kids, grandkids, pets, house, cars, blah, blah, blah, but there are two things I have been craving lately that I want to do ASAP.
  1. Get a damn stamp in my passport. I bought this sucker last summer before the prices went up and do not have the funds to go anywhere. Where would I go? First, Western Europe. I want to go to Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. I wouldn't mind going to where my family is from, either: Ireland, Poland, and Germany. I'd also like to go to Portugal and England. Yes this would be an expensive trip, but they can split into multiple trips, and a girl can dream, right? A cruise through the Mediterranean would be a nice as well. After Western Europe I'd like to go to Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Costa Rica, Madagascar, and New Zealand. So yeah! I'd like to go to all of these countries before I die. Dreams are fun, aren't they?!?! :)
  2. As I network and do informational interviews I have spoken to people who say they love their jobs. I want this before I die. Sure it sounds like a lame request, but seriously? I think it is difficult and is therefore so incredibly important. I want to wake up and be excited to go to work and make a difference. I really really REALLY hope I am lucky enough to have this happen before I keel over.
So here is a picture of the word dream I found, because so far that's all these are!
